MyChina Village Project Overview

The MyChina Village project (2007-2009) aims to develop a pedagogically sound, sustainable virtual world for Chinese learners. With partners Avant Assessment and Centric, the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) at the University of Oregon developed MyChina Village in Second Life. To build a community of users and experiment with different settings and approaches, CASLS and its partners organized events at MyChina Village, including the MyChina Village Virtual Chinese Immersion Camp 2009.

During this month-long virtual camp, 7 learners and 16 students from Soochow University's Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language program explored different environmental issues and performed tasks by communicating only in Chinese. The learners worked on their own goals while monitoring their progress using self evaluation, peer evaluation, and the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP) test.
